Is My Child Ready to Use AI? A Practical Checklist for Parents

Every parent in Singapore is asking this question now. AI is everywhere—school projects, homework tools, even game recommendations. You can't shield your child from it. But you can decide when they're actually ready to use it responsibly.

Here's the hard truth: readiness isn't about age. It's about whether your child can think critically, recognise when they're being manipulated, admit when they don't understand something, and regulate their own behaviour without constant supervision. Some eight-year-olds have this. Some teenagers don't.

This checklist will help you figure out where your child actually stands—and what to do if they're not ready yet.

What "Ready" Actually Means (It's Not About Age)

Before you run through the checklist, let's be clear: readiness has three components.

Critical thinking: Can your child question what they're told? Do they know that information can be wrong, biased, or incomplete? Can they ask "why" without needing an immediate answer?

Digital awareness: Do they understand that what they see online is crafted? That algorithms show them more of what they click? That not everything is real (filters, AI images, deepfakes)?

Emotional regulation: Can your child handle frustration without shutting down or spiralling into anxiety? Can they step away from a screen without it becoming a battle? Can they admit when they're stuck?

Age helps with all three, but it's not deterministic. A curious six-year-old with strong critical thinking beats a disengaged twelve-year-old. A child who's already struggled with screen regulation won't suddenly manage it better with access to ChatGPT.

Answer honestly. If your child scores under 8 "yes" answers, they're not ready yet. If they score 8–11, they're almost ready with close supervision. If they score 12, they're ready for guided, age-appropriate AI use.

If Your Child Isn't Ready Yet (And That's Okay)

If they scored under 8, here's what to do: Build the foundations first.

  • Critical thinking: Ask them open-ended questions constantly. Don't answer immediately. Let them think. "What do you think? Why?" Ask them to look something up and report back. Let them be wrong sometimes.

Some nine-year-olds answer yes to all three. Some thirteen-year-olds don't. Readiness is individual.

The goal isn't to keep AI away from your child—it's already everywhere. The goal is to teach them to think instead of just consume.
